Front and back cover

MINIMAL

ORGANIC

RAW

FRESH

OUTDOORSY

SUBTLE

CALM

CLEVER

Just some of the words that best describe my project or at least how I wanted to portray my magazine to the readers. The contrasting images that I used were deliberate, I wanted there to be very little text on the outside of the magazine so that people understand the importance of the imagery. I considered matching the front cover image with a similar image on the back but I found it difficult to find another photo of a mountain that would sit well on the back cover. I top of the forest photo was perfect as I wanted to use that image within my project but I run out of space inside.

Planning

The idea of choosing a number of pages from the beginning I felt was important!

This was because I felt that I could be more organised, I could choose the number of interviewees I had, I could allow myself a certain number of pages that were purely dedicated to photography.

One of my favourite organising tips for any situation is LISTS.
LISTS, LISTS, LISTS!! It's key for organisation therefore I carried my sketchbook around like my life depended on it. I planned to use the book for designs and layout but it quickly turned into a book to keep organised and esp for the spec of images and what type of font was used so that I could keep everything consistent.
PAGES 1-80

All my own Photography

I knew from the word GO! I wanted the magazine to continue all of my own photography, that was key to my project being of personal success. The idea was that allow the interviews, the quotes and the message that was being portrayed was very important to round the whole magazine off it was key that Photography shawn out front and centre as it was a huge element of the project along side the type treatment and layout.

The three key elements:
PHOTOGRAPHY
TYPOGRAPHY
LAYOUT

Forestry photoshoot

One element of this project that was very unexpected and unique was getting the opportunity to learn first hand the skills and knowledge from those who I interviewed. The forestry photoshoot was by far one of the most interesting especially since I have never had the opportunity of experiencing anything of the such before.

I watched Joe fell a tree and convert it into logs, the tools that he used to aid him through this process and then how he logged them out of the forest.

Article spread design

This was the opening spread for an interview I done with the musician Jack Warnock, the ideas behind my design was to follow the theme of natural, Raw and organic which I have been focusing on for the entire magazine. The first design I liked but the more I looked at it the more I felt that it could be improved. I love the image of the guitar but it wasn't grasping the attention of the reading with this design. I played around with the type of the title and added in the opening first paragraph to the article.
I continued to work with the font and it's colour to see if I could achieve a design that was both eye catching and one that I was happy with, unfortunately I wasn't improving.
I ended up moving the photograph of the guitar onto a different page and started working with an image that I felt could work better because it was landscape I could fill the page more and make it much more interesting. I dropped the opacity of the image so that the title and text could be read and used a colour for the font that brought out the wood and browns in the piano.

Sponsored Salomon gear - Sportique of Magherafelt

My brother who very kindly agreed to be my model for the photoshoot, was sponsored by Salomon, he was given some of their new season running gear;
- Bonatti WP JKT M Lightweight essential shell for mountain running
- Exo Pro 3/4 tight, light compression and breathability.

The photoshoot was done in an old run down farm yard at the foot hill of Charn Tóchair, I originally wanted to get some action shots and go up the mountain but the weather was bad the day that we chose but I was pleased with how the photos turned out and the mood that I was able to create form the set up that we had. I decided to use these photos for Shane's interview in the magazine.

Number of articles

As the weeks ticked by and I referred back to the quote I received from 'Browneprinters' Letterkenny where I got a quote for 80pages, original I wanted to design 120 but I had a talk with Padraic my head supervisor and he explained to me that it would be an incredibly difficult undertaking to do something of this scale. I therefore settled on having 80. Original I had applied to interview 11 people through the rg1 allowing for a fallback if some of the people weren't available for the interview, the plan was to interview 8 people. As I developed my project and planning continued, I realised that the introduction to the magazine on a descriptive basis and a personal introduction was required therefore I didn't have the space to include articles for more than 7 individuals, I wanted to give each person at least 8 pages.

Colours and reasons behind content page

6 About

8 Outdoor lifestyle

10 Shane Donnelly
20 Joe Bradley
30 Scouts
38 Peter Hegarty

48 Creative Culture

50 Jack Warnock
60 Teresa Donnelly
70 Glenn White

The content page was a page that I designed to look similar with the opening pages, the theme between them was the use of negative spaces, either white or the use of one colour. The negative space in the content page blends well with the first three and the description page. The content was the first page that has a real pop of colour but because it is blue and has a calming effect it eases you into the magazine gently and shows the continues theme for the magazine. Showing people what they are in for.

Writing style and structure

I wasn't sure in the beginning how I would write each article but I want them to follow a similar style. Originally I chose to follow the style of having the question I asked then the individuals answer, I got so hung up on the idea that I didn't want to quote anyone wrong that I wasn't going to change the style of the interview. The more I thought about it the more I realised that the style of Question, Answer, Question, Answer etc. would not make for a very interesting read, therefore I had to work on the structure of the articles.

The interview would be wrote in a way that is easy to read and understood.

As well as an environmental and educational resource Glenn explains how Drumnaph and similar local projects have helped with the regeneration of the Irish language on this area and its people. “I think it has been quite an important aspect of this community, not everyone is into the Irish language but projects such as An Carn and Drumnaph were initially started to help promote the Irish language, which in itself has brought funding into this area”. “One hundred year ago this community was an Irish speaking area. It is important to save and promote any indigenous language for many reasons including environmental. The world over, indigenous people and languages tend to be very much linked to the landscape and Irish is no exception to that, as the words for various different land forms and plants are linked to the language. Personally I have learnt various different English common names for plants then the botanical names and now as an Irish learner I am learning the Irish name which is giving me an extra dimension to that plant. The Irish names and the language is very much entrenched in the local environment which is very nice.” “I enjoy learning the Irish language, as it makes my life and my work fuller by having another aspect to it.

As you can see from the sample above, I incorporated the individuals quote and words from our interview but stringed them it together with sentences that helped to create more of a story which made for a smoother and interesting read. The idea is not to just create a magazine that quotes people just to hear their opinion I need the magazine to be enjoyable and have some character to it which will encourage people to read it and get the benefits form reading a magazine of this style with this message.

This style of writing was used for 6 out of the 7 articles in this magazine, I interviewed two scout leaders within the one article, the only way I could present their quotes was through the Question, Answer style.

How do you feel that being involved
in the scouts has benefited you in
every day life?

Karen:  The experiences that I have had
certainly helped me in everyday life. It has defiantly made me more organised, you gather skills like patience and you need a lot of patience especially when your a leader. It also gives you an advantage because other young people don’t get the opportunity to learn the skills that you have learnt through the involvement in the scouts.

Paula:  I have taken more into
consideration, looking at the children

smiling when they’re having a good time it makes me think, maybe this is worth while doing; so yes it does benefit me, when I see how happy they are because of the work we as leaders put in.

Chapter Pages

The outdoors is a place to
unwind, disconnect and breath a
breathe of fresh air; constantly
searching for a greater balance in our
lives we strive for a stronger
connection to the great outdoors.

There is no wifi in the mountains
but I promise you will find a
better connection.

Our culture is a way of life, the way
in which we know how to express
ourselves, the teachings, the values and
the traditions that have been passed onto us.

“A people without the
knowledge of their past history,

origin and culture is like a tree without roots”

The chapter pages were two pages that I needed to stand out, catch the readers attention and be easily recognised as the chapter pages, therefore once I decided on the images I would use, I applied the same layout for the writing on the page. The white boxes, the same opacity, type, size of type and similar amount of words for each description. This allowed me to create consistency and similarity.

Rg1 Approval

25.04.16
About time!!

Rg1 approval was the most frustrating part of my final major project, a project that was running smoothly bar the huge inconvenience that surrounded getting approval to interview the individuals that I had chosen for my project. After weeks and weeks of waiting approval finally came through on Monday 25th April, interviews commenced that week. The biggest section of my project was interviewing, recording, transcription of the work, article writing, proofreading and then design of the articles in magazine format. Although I needed the content of the interviews for the overall magazine, the key was layout; layout of the paragraphs, layout of the columns, double checking for no 'widows' or 'orphans' in my writing, the photography that helped to tie the stories together and allowing to be an interesting experience for the reader as they take a creative and adventurous journey through the magazine.

R E F E R E N C E S . AND . D I S S E R T A T I O N

Within the same week of receiving the rg1 approval our dissertation was due for submission Thursday 28th April. Research throughout my project was documented and included throughout my dissertation, this allowed for me to discuss the reasons for particular influences, why they have influenced my work and how would I incorporate this idea into my work. I noticed that a lot of influence was begin sourced from already existing magazines, not your typical magazine of gossip but lifestyle and creative magazines, they're approach to design and layout gave me the push to follow through with the ideas that I have had before barking on this project.
