Software
Using Indesign for the layout of my magazine, I am able to have more control over the font, type, images, layout, scale and overall magazine through this software. I am working with 80 pages to begin, with an average of 6-8 pages per interview. I am layout out the magazine with the images that I have in order to get an idea of the number of pages I need.

Pinterest Images
I have been using Pinterest to pin images that inspire me because of their style or colouring. I am photographing scenery as well as people for my project and I love the feeling that you can get from an image when you look at it, it can hold so much depth and interest. I want people to emotionally connect with my photos therefore I have put a lot of research into capturing the best image for each of the interviews. Some sample so far.

Instagram Interest
Instagram has allowed me to gather interest for my magazine as a mode of advertising, this is a great way to get my work out there without having my name attached. This is my research process that I will include in my dissertation, show what photography works, what images gain more interest and if/when I take this publication further and develop it by printing on a bigger scale I will already have gain the interest of individuals who could be interested in purchasing one.

The best kind of morning is a morning spent ballooning. I am one of the crew that helps set up a hot-air balloon, in order to fly we need very specific weather conditions and that doesn't always happen therefore any chance that I get to snap some shots of it up I always make the most of it. There are just a sample of some of the photos from that day of flying. I plan to use these photos within my magazine as I will be interviewing my day of everything ballooning and being a pilot.
This choice of project has pushed me to be organised and always ready, my project's progress lays a lot of the availability of other people and weather conditions. The interviews will commence as soon as I receive the go ahead from the rg1 form but I also have to plan the photoshops with people around the weather as some of them are outside. Depending on what I will be shooting I might need it to be dry or good clear weather, I prefer when it isn't too bright as that doesn't make the photos look the best.
Below are some of the photos I captured that day of ballooning.

Choosing the right font for a magazine is difficult and I have only started with font for the logo on the front cover. I have gone for a 'DK Semarang' an all capital font, it has a bold presence with soft edges that works well, so far. It took me 2mins to make a real simple logo to be used as the profile picture for the 'Sustenance_Magazine' Instagram account. I wanted something clean and crisp yet strong and grounding to represent certainty, by creating a logo that was clear and readable was all I needed for the Instagram logo as this was al I was trying to create.
I used the logo on the Instagram account, the account has allowed me to put only the images that I want to use in my magazine separate from my own personal account. I want to use this element of social media to analyse what images get more likes and attention that others, to see what style of photography people are more interested in. Experimenting to see what catches peoples attention.

I took me some time to get a grasp of my dissertation, I wasn't sure how to approach it and wasn't sure who or what I was looking up as my reference. I had a chat with Padriac my supervisor and he helped explain the route that I was taking and the context in which to write in. Rather that focusing on the research and studies done on the benefits of being in the outdoors and research on too much screen time, Padraic explained that I should include the magazines that I am using as inspiration and the artists that are inspiring my work; these should all be used as my references. Now that I understand the direction of my report and referencing I have a much clearer idea and have made a lot of progress with my dissertation.

I seem to have got bogged down with so much paper work through out this project that it got me extremely frustrated with my project and the direction it was taking, I wanted to create an editorial piece because of my interest in design, photography and reading. I understood from the beginning that I would have a large amount of 'journalism' work to undertake as I was writing articles but I didn't know that I would have to do so much risk assessment work. I wanted to remind myself why I was partaking in this idea for my project, it was the element of being in the outdoors and the message that I was trying to communicate with people was the importance that we as a society have become so engrossed with our phones, laptops and technology that we forget to enjoy each others company and to spend time outside.
This was annoying because I wasn't practising what I was preaching, due to this project is equaled that I was beginning to spend less time outdoors than I had ever before. I had to put a stop to that!!. Therefore I headed on a hike with my brother up the highest mountain in the Sperrin mountain range, Sawel.

The rg1 form is a research governance and ethics form. The governance of research is defined as setting standards, defining mechanisms to deliver standards; monitoring and assessing arrangements; improving research quality and safeguarding the public, by enhancing ethical and scientific quality, promoting good practice, reducing adverse incidents, ensuring that lessons are learned and preventing poor performance and misconduct.
In order for me to begin the interviews that I require as content for my magazine articles I must fill out the rg1 form along with other forms that are relevant to my particular project and questionaries that are tailored for each individual or group. I have been gathering information and working on the rg1 forms since the beginning of February and I am waiting for my supervisors signature in order to send the form to be processed.
The process has been long and very frustrating I had a plan and timetable as to when I would like to have particular things achieved in order for me to stay organised but due to this form I have had to tweak my schedule many times. I can not begin my interviews until I receive full confirmation and go ahead from the rg1 committee.

Studies have shown that over use of screen based devices can be harmful, esp to young children who are still developing. I researched this issue is I feel that are we grow and develop our technology, for it to become more educational, faster, easier to use and better for teacher, the age group that will be using it the most are children in school. As they grow and develop are they being exposed to too much screen time before they are developed enough? Research shows that over exposure to the internet or gaming can lead to addictions with structural and functional changes to the brain. This is al research that I am looking to gather for my dissertation along with research into the benefits of children learning in the outdoors and breaking there time up from being outside and being in the classroom; these are issues that are being constantly researched as we are society is continually developing new and better ways of teaching; but are they really better?

I have spent the past two weeks, working on the RG1 application form, to allow me to interview people I have in mind for my project with permission from the university. Every person that I plan to interview I have contacted them and explained purpose of their involvement and weather or not they would be interesting in partaking in an interview based on their job or hobbies. Not only do I have to contact them first with my idea, I then have to wait and see if they are interested in helping out and finally then spending time on drawing up some questions for the interview. I have found this quiet a long process, there is nothing I want more than to jump straight into my project and interview people but I feel that the planning process is just as important as any other element of the project. I have 10/11 people in mind for interviewing and I am currently tailoring questions around what I would like to find out or what I want them to focus on for their interview; obviously I have left room for them to voice there opinion on the matter.
My desire for each of the articles is for it to be as natural and flowing as possible. I want them to real descriptions and authentic interpretations. All this preparation and planning will mean less chance for problems or wasting time when it will matter most. I have a sketch book that is always with me; this allows me to write down all the idea that I have, progress of my work, changes and the development process. I write lists no matter If it is for school work or chores around the house so it comes second nature to me, therefore I have incorporated this into being organised for this project.
I met with a potential printer for my final magazine. I was able to discuss the path I want to take with my project, the size of the copy, the number of pages, the paper weight and quality. All these are key elements that play a huge roll in the final presentation of my final piece, therefore meeting with them face to face was fantastic as I feel more confident to potentially work with them. A couple of days after meeting them them, they were able to send me an email with a quote for the quantity and size I was looking.
